The Force has awakened. BOOM.

Alright. There were 6 movies. Now there is 7. You either love it, hate it, aren't sure or don't give a dang, but Star Wars Ep. VII is coming. I am very excited for it personally. Some people absolutely hate the prequels, but I don't and never did, so I'm not bothered at all by a new SW movie. I saw SW IV first when I was really young, then I saw eps. 1 also when I was really young, I really liked it. Since I wasn't a SW geek then and hadn't seen the other originals I didn't have any expectations or anything. I really liked Jar Jar, thankfully that opinion has changed but the prequels have never bothered me like it has some other fans. I actually lost interest in Star Wars, the order I watched the films would be, 4, 1, 5, 6, 2, 3. Eps. 2 was probably the last one I saw as a geek, that was a few (2-3, maybe 4) years ago, by the time I saw 3 I was no longer a geek. But with Eps.7 and the rebooted version of  Star Wars Battlefront video game, my geek (or at least nostalgia) has been brought back. I think my days of super fan are over, but I'm hoping to be into it again to a certain extent, enough to call myself a fan, anyway.
Anyhoo, enough of the backdrop. So here I am going to give my opinions and speculations. It is going to be concerned mostly with the most recent trailer, but I will be referring back  to the earlier ones as well. Overall I am very impressed with how things are looking. Mark Hamill put it this way (which I think is perfect) "Nothing's changed... I mean everything's changed, but nothing's changed, and that's exactly how you want it".

So first off, the trailer is just knock your filthy socks off amazing. the cinematics, the music, all of it. The music is amazing because it is consisted of revamped versions of the original soundtracks. It retains the "echo" of the originals. This is big. This is not only the first Star Wars movie in ten years, it is picking up a story left off in 1983.

So now on with it. The trailers have shown us a lot. Yet there is still tons and tons we do not know. "Is the gang (Luke, Han, Leia, Chew, the droids) together?" "Is Han and Leia married?" "Is Rey their daughter?" Who is Poe Dameron?" bla bla bla.

Well it seems that the empire (re-branded as "First Order") is back, with Darth Vader's replacement and Storm troopers 2.0. Finn was a storm trooper but apparently didn't like what he was doing at his job so he defected by stealing a tie fighter with a 2.0 paint scheme (the shots showing him on Jakku shows him wearing storm trooper armor, if he didn't steal the fighter he would have been wearing a pilot uniform).

The planet that Rey seems to be "stranded on" is actually Jakku, not Tatooine as I had previously thought. We don't know much about her, in fact it may seem she has a identity crisis because of her "I am no one" line. Either that or she has a really low self-esteem. The fact that little has been revealed about her leaves open the possibility she may be Han and Leia's daughter, I think it is also interesting that she appears to be a techie/gear head, which has always been a Skywalker trait (I almost wonder if she is scavenging for parts to build a ship to get off Jakku?) . Apparently she and Finn work together, but what for is again, unknown. Also Finn is a Jedi/force user, as is obvious by his brandishing of a light saber. It seems that Han Solo flew the two off Jakku by the way.

Han and Chewie are obviously still working together, Han is getting up there but Chewie looks not a day older. Luke has been elusive from the trailers, the only shot of him is the one where he is cloaked and reaching out a mechanical hand to R2-D2. We pretty much know what he is going to look like however because of a "leaked" photo of Mark Hamill in full Jedi master garb. Leia has a brief shot in the new trailer, getting hugged by Han and looking like her dog just died, but it is still unclear whether they got married or not.

Not much is known about "Kylo Ren" either, besides that he has Vader's charred helmet and a weird light saber modification. The "mini-sabers" work as a hand guard I assume, which makes sense, but why not make it with the stuff the magna guard staff are made of rather than something that could potentially slice your fingers off, but hey do what you want.
One speculation is that he collects Sith artifacts, which makes sense. I wonder if KR is even aware that Vader turned against the Dark side in the end. Doesn't make a big difference but is just a neat possibility. Someone else speculated that perhaps the "First Order" is darker and more "Sith-like" and dedicated than the original Empire. Not sure, but it's a valid assumption and that is cool if it turns out to be true. One very interesting thing I have noticed from the above shot is that Kylo is surrounded by what appears to be bounty hunters and/or (more likely) wannabe Sith. Also, it appears that there are dead bodies in the background. Possibly wookies.

Before we go on, I want to make my comments on the new storm troopers. Simply revamping them is a bit unoriginal, yes, but the STs will never got old and I don't mind them getting reused. The new storm troopers are considerably sleeker than the previous with their clean lines and rounded corners. Also their blasters look similar to the old E-11s but slightly different, and the white accents are obvious. The bloody helmet shot is really cool, but it also gives a lot of valuable close-up detail. Instead of the old mouth grille, the new helmets have a speaker-like steel mesh. In the below shot you can see (on the far left) a storm trooper with a bandoleer/strap thing and you can also see two "flame troopers". From a SW7 Lego set featuring flame troopers you can see that their helmet design is different from the standard type. It will be interesting to see if the new storm troopers can hit barn doors or if they will act much the same as they always have.
Next up is this Poe Dameron guy. Apparently he fights with the Rebels/New Republic/resistance/whatever, and due to the shot of him in the trailer getting tortured by Kylo and the shot in the comic-con reel showing a storm trooper leading a prisoner (who looked like Dameron) down the hall of a First Order ship I speculate that he was captured. Whether Kylo was trying to make him switch sides is unclear, but it might be possible that he got him to do something, because the trailer shots seem to give the impression that the good guys are losing the battle that they are giving us a glimpse of (the shot of Finn Chewie and Han with their hands up though the way they are lowering them with shock my indicate they are being rescued). The shot of the exploding trees right after Dameron is interesting as I wonder if that has to do with the death-star like thing seen in a SW7 poster.

Oh yeah, and I almost forgot the beach ball droid. Not much to say about him. Don't actually care. Moving on.

Also their is Captain Phasma the silver-armored female storm trooper. We don't know much about her either.

Okay also the shot of Rey crying is quite mysterious. And slightly alarming. To me the "body" looks like Chewie. I see hair and what kind of looks like his bandoleer. It seems kind of obvious for them to reveal it though, so maybe they just want us to think it's Chewie. However it may seem that there are other wookies (or similar creatures) that are killed (back when I was talking about Kylo's posse). Time will tell.

I also think it is quite cool how they seem to be "breaking the boundaries" between planets and space.
the crashed ships on Jakku with Rey climbing inside, and the air battle later in trailer (plus storm troopers getting strafed by an X-wing).

The "it's true... all of it" part led to speculation saying that perhaps communications are down due to the end of the war and the fall of the Empire, since Rey and Finn have "heard stories" and seemingly don't know much about the Jedi or how the war was won. This wasn't my idea, but I think it is cool and it is quite possible that that speculation is true.
50% of SW fans: "HE'S AS COOL AS EVER!" other 50%: "He's SO old!"

Also it is interesting to note that the X-wing helmets have been upped to 2.0 as well and that BB-8 (beach ball) is X-wing compatible.

*note the ST trying to fly*

Alright, so I guess that is about it, I could pick it apart and write another paragraph or two, but I'm pretty satisfied with what I've covered. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this. I think it will be amazing, but I know that not everyone feels that way. How about you? Do you look forward to seeing it? what are your speculations? Tell me in the comments if you like, and thanks for reading-Andrew

  2. This is awesome Andrew! This is Eli by the way. I actually read an article the other day speculating that Kylo's bodyguards were other members of the Knights of Ren, a group of Sith wannabe type people I think. They are also Force users. Check out Screenrant.com, I think that's where I found it. Awesome article, I'll be back for more!

    1. I hadn't read that before, I assume that the whole Knights of Ren thing is from the comics/ EU (expanded universe) if so, it is interesting that they are using it.

  6. Came from your sister's blog - I am SO EXCITED about this trailer! I've never been into Star Wars, never watched any of the movies, although I "grew up" with it - my older siblings watched the movies and it's kind of rubbed off on me. But this trailer's got me really interested in it again! I like the girl. She's got grit!

    1. Yeah, like I said I lost interest in it, but I'm getting into again. I'll have to see though if it will pass after the movie is out, over if I have "gotten some of my geek back", ha ha.

  7. I also came from your sister's blog (Oh, and Rosie McCann--above--is MY sister. Hope that's not too confusing. :) ) I really enjoyed reading this post--I'm also really excited about the new movie! The trailer is AMAZING. I'm so excited to see Han, Luke, and Leia again--and the three new guys (Finn, Rey, and Poe) look awesome too! I was a bit worried about the scene with Rey crying; I hope nothing too awful is going to happen :)

(If 'they' decide to kill Finn I shall scream. Just warning everybody.)

    1. My sister says she'll scream in-theater if Han and Leia aren't married. I wouldn't scream but it would be pretty stupid if they weren't.

    2. It would indeed--I mean, hello, they've only had like, TWENTY YEARS to get that piece of business taken care of???

    3. Andrew, you should scream. It would be so funny if a guy screamed in the theater. ;) haha

Jessica, we'll have to talk about the movie after we see it and tell each other if we screamed! :)

    4. If they're not married now, they never will be.

    7. I know, right? If they ain't done it by now they ain't never going to do it. The three of us should definitely compare notes afterwards and see how it all was :)
